However, Smith insists this is not just about him taking on the aliens once again.

'I actually think this is a small art film masquerading as a big summer blockbuster,' he explains. 'It�s a wonderful blend of genres and it�s smart when it�s supposed to be smart, funny when it�s supposed to be funny.

'The special effects are incredible but it doesn�t depend on them. I think it�s the future of action movies because it�s a character-driven story.'

Smith, who famously turned down the lead role in The Matrix, admits I, Robot was also something of a dream for a self-confessed gadget freak. 'They built an Audi car specifically for the movie but people want the car. I want the car. It�s really cool. I love stretching the ideas and possibilities with technology.' "
